Wieliczka vs. Bochnia Salt Mine: Which Should You Visit?
Kraków sits close to not one but two historic salt mines open to visitors: the famous Wieliczka, and the quieter, older Bochnia. Both are worth seeing, but they suit slightly different travellers.
Wieliczka: the famous one
Wieliczka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited attractions in Poland, known for its underground chapels, salt sculptures and the vast Chapel of St. Kinga. It draws large numbers of visitors, especially in summer, which means busier routes and a livelier atmosphere.
Bochnia: the older, quieter one
Bochnia is Poland's oldest salt mine, predating Wieliczka, and one of the oldest in the world still open to the public. Its tourist route includes a boat trip across an underground lake and a similarly rich mining history, but with noticeably fewer crowds, making it feel more like an underground exploration than a busy tourist circuit.
Which to choose
- Choose Wieliczka if you want the best-known sights, the Chapel of St. Kinga, and don't mind sharing the route with other visitors.
- Choose Bochnia if you'd rather explore at a calmer pace, are curious about mining history specifically, or have already seen Wieliczka on a previous trip.
Can you do both?
They're about forty minutes apart by road, so it's possible to visit both in one long day, though most visitors pick one and pair it with something else — Kraków's Old Town, or a second day trip entirely.
